Refugees and foreign workers in Israel

40,000 asylum seekers (many from Sudan and Eritrea) and 80,000 foreign workers reside in Israel – 0.5% of the population. The politics of early 2018, as the Knesset approved an increased number of foreign workers and backflipped on its refugee deportation policy, highlighted the complicated issues this demographic fact creates: issues of security, prejudice, international law, and identity. Does the presence of a non-Jewish population threaten Israel's Jewishness? What is the status of the ‘other’ in a modern Jewish state, and what do Jewish values demand?
